On May 6 and 22, the Department of Physical Measurements welcomed nearly 80 students from two middle schools in Grenoble: Gérard Philippe Middle School and Village Olympique Middle School. These afternoon visits gave the students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of science and technology through interactive workshops led by second-year students.

Activities and demonstrations

As in the previous event last January, the students were introduced to a wide range of scientific topics through demonstrations from the Science Festival. Divided into small groups, they were able to explore various fields across several specialized rooms:
  • Photovoltaics in the chromatography lab
  • Mechanical waves in an acoustics lab
  • Geothermal Energy in the Thermal Room
  • Cryogenics in a cleanroom
  • Wind power in the chemistry lab
  • Electric car in the electrical room
  • Color in the optical room
  • Digital Technology in the Machine Shop
  • Solar thermal systems in the materials classroom
  • Energy in the Project Room
  • Biomass in the control room
  • Luminescence in the spectroscopy lab

The visit also gave the middle school students a chance to explore the department’s lab facilities and get a firsthand look at the daily lives of students in the Physical Measurements program.

Interactions with students

Each afternoon concluded with a friendly Q&A session, during which young visitors had the opportunity to ask the students about their academic journeys, their future plans, and life at IUT1. These discussions sparked curiosity and interest, while offering a concrete first glimpse into higher education.
These two orientation days combined educational activities, hands-on learning, and the sharing of experiences, further strengthening the ties between IUT1 and local middle schools.
